The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, SBA School of Sciences and Engineering is seeking applications to fill in the position(s) of Research Assistant(s)/Fellow(s) to carry out research in the field of sustainable process design and analysis of renewable energy production. The successful candidate will involve in the project that focuses on developing a process wherein solar energy is applied to produce synthesis gas from carbon dioxide and water; the produced syngas is then processed to yield liquid hydrocarbon products. The ultimate goal of the project is to develop models and tools to support decision making about (1) how carbon dioxide should be captured from power or cement plants, (2) which solar technology should be used to produce syngas from carbon dioxide and water, and finally (3) what product should be produced from syngas to maximize economic feasibility.

The Responsibilities:

Your responsibilities will include data collection from literature. You will apply this knowledge in software programming (e.g., GAMS or Python) and in a more high-level process simulator (e.g., Aspen Plus) with the aim to benchmark the performance of the various technologies based on techno-economic and environmental criteria.

Required selection criteria:

  • Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering
  • Hands-on skills of process design and optimization, techno-economic, and life cycle assessments
  • Documented (publications) experience in (a) process simulation using Aspen Plus or similar software, (2) process optimization using Matlab, GAMS, or Python, and (c) life cycle assessments using SimaPro or similar software
  • Great command of both written and spoken English
