Job Description

The Center for Air Pollution and Environment (CAPE) at LUMS invites applications for the position of Lab Technician. The successful candidate will oversee CAPE’s laboratory facilities and equipment and provide technical and operational support to faculty, students, and research staff.

Key Responsibilities: 

The Lab Technician will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating the installation, commissioning, and calibration of laboratory equipment;
  • Operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining analytical instruments and air-quality monitoring equipment;
  • Developing and implementing preventive-maintenance schedules;
  • Training researchers and students in the safe and effective use of laboratory equipment;
  • Supporting sample collection, preparation, analysis, and data-quality assurance;
  • Developing and maintaining standard operating procedures, equipment logs, maintenance records, and laboratory documentation;
  • Managing laboratory consumables, chemicals, spare parts, and other inventories;
  • Supporting the procurement of equipment, consumables, and technical services;
  • Contributing to the efficient day-to-day operation and continued development of CAPE’s research facilities.

Funding and Appointment: 

This is a full-time position within CAPE. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. A competitive salary will be offered based on the candidate’s qualifications and relevant experience, and in accordance with LUMS policies.

Qualification

Applicants should have:

  • At least a bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, chemistry, environmental science, or a closely related field;
  • Relevant experience in the operation and maintenance of laboratory or analytical equipment;
  • A practical understanding of instrument installation, calibration, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and quality control;
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety procedures, chemical handling, and waste management;
  • Strong organizational, record-keeping, and problem-solving skills;
  • Good written and verbal communication skills; and
  • The ability to work independently while supporting a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Experience with ion chromatography, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, or related environmental analytical techniques would be an advantage.
