On October 27, 2023, the Office of Human Resources, in collaboration with the Centre for Business Society (CBS), Campus Health, and LUMS Community Service Society (LCSS), organized Breast Cancer Awareness Day at LUMS. The event raised awareness about breast cancer and emphasize LUMS' dedication to this important cause. The event partnered with external organizations, including Pink Ribbon Pakistan, Integrated Medical Care Hospital (IMC), Cancer Care Hospital providing 2 days free Mammography Camp, and Dr. Isa Lab, who established a medical camp in LUMS Medical Centre to conduct tests related to women's health.
The session of the event took the form of a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Zahra Shehzad, the Medical Officer at LUMS Medical Centre. The panel included Dr. Iram Naseem, a Breast Surgeon, and Dr. Sadia Sadiq, an Oncologist from IMC, who discussed various aspects of breast cancer, including medical treatments, symptoms, stages, and common misconceptions. Furthermore, Dr. Komal Faisal, a brave cancer survivor and a psychologist, shared her personal journey, shedding light on the challenges she faced and the emotional journey she and her family undertook. Her story served as an inspiration to many.
The CEO of Pink Ribbon Pakistan, Mr. Omer Aftab, a prominent organization in the fight against breast cancer, shared insights into Pink Ribbon's journey, its contributions to society's breast cancer awareness, and the impact they have made in promoting this cause.
Following the panel discussion, an interactive Q&A session engaged the audience, allowing them to seek clarifications and share their concerns about breast cancer.
To express gratitude to the panellists for their valuable contributions, Mr. Tariq Sheikh, Director of Campus Health, and Dr. Misbah, Director of CBS, presented tokens of appreciation to each panellist. Dr. Iram took the opportunity to educate the female attendees about the methodology of self-examination, an essential aspect of breast health awareness.
The event concluded with an awareness walk across the LUMS campus, symbolizing the commitment of LUMS and its partners to raising awareness about breast cancer and encouraging early detection and preventive measures.
